Demo Day 2015

Demo Day 2015

Our annual Demo Day is always one of our most popular events of the year.  This Saturday players will drop in and get a great Goody Box full of samples, coupons, and giveaways for over a dozen different games.  We will have a ton of volunteers around to show them how to play all kinds of different games.  Basically it’s the best time of the year to try new games, because you can try a bunch at once, then you can use the coupons and goodies in the Goody Box to help you get in to the games you like the best!

When: Saturday, December 5th, 12:00pm – 5:00pm

Entry Fee: $10.00

You Get: The BKG Goody Box (filled with awesome samples and goodies), a free ballot for the Demo Day Draws,  and access to all of the demonstration games.

Demo Day Draws: We will be drawing for a free $50.00 Black Knight Games gift card, as well as some other fun prizes.

Game Demonstrations:
We will have several stations where a BKG staff member, Standard Bearer, or volunteer will be running a games demonstration.  Simply go up to them and ask to play and they will teach you the basics for the game.  In addition to that they will give you another ballot for the Demo Day Draws!

You Can Help!:
If you would like to volunteer to teach a game that you love to those attending Demo Day contact Jay and let him know!

New D&D Starter Sets are Here!

This week, we’re excited for the release of Starter Set products for the newest edition of Dungeons & Dragons.  This kit contains everything you get to get started in the thoroughly playtested and extremely well reviewed new set, and should keep folks excited until the release of the Player’s Handbook in August.  If you’ve participated in our D&D Encounters series, this is the official release of the edition you’ve been beta testing for months.

What’s in the Box?  The new starter set includes a 64-page adventure book with everything the Dungeon Master needs to get started, a 32-page rulebook for playing characters level 1 – 5, 5 pre-generated characters, each with a character sheet and supporting reference material, and 6 dice.

How Much is it?  It’s never been easier to jump into D&D.  This box sells for $23.99 and lets you jump right into the game.

When can I learn more?  Our D&D Encounter series is wrapping up for the summer over the next few sessions and will resume in the fall.  In the mean time, our resident DM and D&D Standard Bearer Tommy will be offering a few Wednesday nights of his time to do demo days of the new system.  Join Tommy on July 23rd and July 30th at 6pm to learn what you need to know to be an expert for Encounters in the fall, or to start your own sessions.

Magic: the Gathering Gaming Changes

We have been looking at our Magic: the Gathering events over the past while in an effort to make your MTG gaming experiences better here at Black Knight Games.  In doing so we have come up with several changes that will go into effect in 2014.  If you have any feedback on these changes or other ideas we are, as always, eager to hear them!  Our goal is always to make sure that the gaming experience at BKG is the best that it can be, and we are happy to adapt if it means improving it:

BK Standard BearerMagic Standard Bearer

While we are already lucky to have Seth contributing to the MTG experience at BKG we are appointing Shayne to be in charge of our MTG events.  As a Standard Bearer Shayne will have the opportunity to get feedback directly from you the gamers, and to have the authority to implement new policies.  We are hoping that his direct contributions will add more to the experience and give you the kind of support you deserve.

Prize Pool Structure

All magic tournaments will now reward players based on their number of wins, rather than their standing in the tournament. Players who are X-1 in an event will gain all gain a minor prize comprised often of booster packs, and players who are X-0 in an event will gain a major prize comprised of packs, stronghold points and other goodies.  This means that you won’t miss out on prizes due to tie-breakers!!

Constructed Tournament Price Adjustment

Standard and modern constructed tournaments will now be $5.00 for stronghold members and $6.00 for non-members. This is a small change for many reasons. The first being that our competitors have been asking for a larger prize pool, and since we contribute 100% of the tournament entry cost in constructed tournaments to the prize pool, this is the best way to do that. Also, customers will now gain stronghold points on their tournament purchases, where as with $4.00 tournaments there were no points claims (since only purchases of $5 earn pts). In addition, purchasing tournaments entries by debit will no longer require you to purchase an additional item to cover the $5.00 minimum on debit transactions.

sm BK Playing CardsMore Events & More Types

We already have a successful FNM crowd, our Pre-Releases are always well attended, and Wednesday Night Modern is doing well too.  However there are many more opportunities to run events in several formats.  We plan to run more events overall, and expand in to other formats.  Here are a couple of new tourneys we have upcoming:

The format will be modern, and the entry fee will be $30.00. The top 8 will each receive a draft set (3 packs) of modern masters, along with large store credit prizes (based on attendance) and of course there byes for Grand Prix Montreal to be won. Miles Smith will be the head judge.

Commander Solo Tournament

We will be hosting a 1v1 Commander tournament on Monday February 3rd. We will be using standard commander rules, and the entry fee will be $5.00. 5 card sideboards will be in effect, chosen before game 1 after presenting commanders. The best 2 of 3 games will decide the match.

Fundraiser Update: New Perk Level Added

sm BK Painting MiniWe have had a very generous donation to our campaign by Kaz our resident painting expert! Kaz is a very friendly and helpful member of the Black Knight Games community, and as anyone that has seen his work can attest: he is a great painter. Kaz has generously offered his services to two lucky perk-claimers, so we have added a new perk to the list!

A Work of Art
This new package includes everything from THE KNIGHT – which means you get the $25 Membership (or $25 towards any membership you want). You get the limited edition Stronghold Game Lounge T-Shirt, and the 12 pack of BKG D6s. You get your name on the Founder’s Wall, and a neat icon on our forum telling everyone that you are a founder. You get 2 tickets to our exclusive Founder’s Party that we will have the evening before we open the new location.

But the best part is the part Kaz has donated. You can pick any miniature that you want to have painted as long as it isn’t too large (roughly the size of infantry or a light warjack is about right). BKG will supply the miniature for you – to a maximum of $30 (If the miniature is more than that, or you wish yo supply your own mini let us know and we’ll work something out). Then Kaz will take his talents and do a very high-end paint job to your specifications! Not everyone is an amazing artist, but that doesn’t mean you can’t own some amazing art! Kaz has done plenty of commissions in the past and he knows what he’s doing – you won’t be disappointed.

Because he does this in his spare time, and because he really takes his time to do it right, the first one claimed will have a finished target date of July 31st, and the second will be August 31st.

If you’ve already made a claim on a different perk, but you prefer this one now just let us know and we can make the switch for you!

Don’t miss this opportunity to own an amazingly painted mini! And a big thanks goes to Kaz for offering his services to help out our project!

Demo Day Recap and Upcoming Events

Wow!  Let me just start this off by saying this year’s demo day was a huge success.  Demonstrators for almost twenty different game systems taught an overwhelming number of new players.  We raffled off a $50 Gift Card and a couple of $20 Gift Cards to a few happy gamers.  To top it all off, we all had a lot of fun doing it.  If you missed this year, mark next year on your calendar well in advance as this is an event not to miss.  If you’re still wondering about a game you didn’t get a chance to have demoed, contact one of our Standard Bearers to set up a private tutorial.

For all of you out there who learned about a new game and are excited to play it, here are the next steps:

Players who tried out one of our TCGs, World of Warcraft the card game has a weekly WoW Battleground day, every Tuesday.

Our Pokemon league runs on Monday nights, and today marks the first release event run at Black Knight Games.  This new set is an exciting one, as a lot of the old favorites are making a return.

The Magic: the Gathering league for Return to Ravnica just kicked off again on Mondays as well.  We run multiple tournaments for Magic, with our Friday Night Magic events running every (you guessed it) Friday Night.  If you’re new to the game of Magic and want to start playing and collecting at the same time, our Drafts held on alternating Fridays are the best way to get involved.

Our major miniature games were not forgotten at demo day.  Warmachine and Hordes demos were popular, as always.  If you’re excited about picking up a Warmachine/Hordes Battlegroup we have the perfect opportunity: a journeyman league at BKG!  Starting on December 27th Black Knight will be hosting a journeyman league.  Entry is $25, which you get as credit toward Warmahordes purchases during the league.  Details will follow, so check back here.

For players excitied to start 40K or Warhammer Fantasy, we have a great tournament scene here and events scheduled every month.  Our next 40K tournament is a great one to bring a friend to, the ever popular 40K Doubles! (set for December 15th)  December’s WFB event is 1000 points and will involved a hero who gains power throughout the event.  Come on out on the 29th and Assemble the Chosen.

One of my favorite aspects of Demo day is the opportunity to show off some of our smaller-scale, skirmish games.  Will, one of our seasoned gamers, demoed Malifaux all day, a Victorian game of Gothic magic and terror.

Meanwhile Jim showed off Infinity, a game that just released an exciting campaign book.  I have an Infinity crew and always felt what the game needed was exciting scenario play, and now it has it.

Mykk was showing of Dropzone Commander (now in stock at BKG).  This 15mm skirmish game launched to fantastic praise and success, but low availability.  Now that it’s finally in stock and we’ve finished our first Call to Arms for it, players were excited to play it on Saturday.  With our Retake the Cradle Worlds DZC league starting Nov 20th, there’s never been a better time to pick up this new hotness.

I spent the day showing Blood Bowl to players and had a lot of fun.  Season Two for Blood Bowl is starting in January, so anyone keen to get involved should sign up in the store.  We will be collecting a minor entry this season to cover the cost of a new pitch and some sweet dice for all involved.  Sign up now while there are still spots!

Tim plays games. Rawr!

The last game I want to talk about has been a real hit here at BKG  — X-Wing!  We have a tournament day coming up that we’ve moved from December 8th to December 22nd to let us offer the new Slave 1 and Millennium Falcon as prizes.  If this game continues to grow in popularity we have a league planned for the new year.

We also had demos for Flames of War, Quarriors, Dominion, IKRPG, Pathfinder, and Dystopian Wars, but the day was so busy I don’t even have a chance to check them out.

Check back here regularly for updates on all of the above.  If you have a question or comment about anything happening at BKG feel free to email us or, better yet, post something up for discussion on our forums.

Hammer Bowl: The BKG Blood Bowl League

Well sports fans, the unimaginable has just happened, blood bowl is back, and badder than ever. From broken legs, to gouged eyes, handoffs, and hail marys, Blood Bowl is blitzing into Black Knight Games. The living Rulebook has been updated and can be found online, introducing new teams, new penalties, and a faster paced game. Blood Bowl is that game of football that everyone wanted to play, from scoring touchdowns to putting on a pair of brass knuckles and lining up the perfect hit.Black Knight Games would like to introduce, Hammer Bowl. A tournament to take place starting late September, with teams from across the warhammer world. Each week will see members of the league pitted off against one another to progress their team, and became the true champions of Hammer Bowl. How does it all work you ask? You need to have a Blood bowl team that is ready to go, and an understanding of the current rules, called the blood bowl competition rules… not to sure about what you’re doing though? Email Marc, and he’ll be more than happy to set up a time to teach you a thing or too about a good bashing and some scoring.

When:  TBD, sign up now and once we have a good number of players we will announce the beginning of the season!

Entry Fee:  None!

League Divisions & Games:  Depending on how many players are in the league their could be 1 or 2 or if really need be 3 divisions, with each division having 8 players in it. As the season numbers get underway, I’ll publish a list, and a “playoff schedule” seeing who will be crowned victorious. (1vs8, 2vs7 etc) You will play against different players each week (predetermined), on times that work for both of you. Each game both players will report back to me and I’ll make sure to keep note of scores, money made, and any advancements made by players… or injuries (boo, hiss), and report them each Sunday in the forums with WEEKLY updates.

How to Join: All you need to do is sign up, I’d like to stick to 16 teams or less, but the more the merrier. You can email me, or PM me on the forums and I’ll put you on the roster.

What You Need: You need to have your own blood bowl team worth 1,000,000 gold to start the season, and you need to have a good idea of the rules (free online).  You will need to have your roster into me before the start date, and if you could email me a picture of your team as well, that’d be amazing. I’ll make team profiles, and you can add updates to them as we go. If you’ve got these things you are more than welcome to join!

Missed Games: What if I can’t make a game for the week? Unfortunately, just like in real life, if you can’t make a game you forfiet the game. But all is not lost! The game will be a forfeit with a score of 3 – 1. Meaning you will get to decide who scored your touch downs for each team (only a possible 2 touchdowns per player) and you’ll get to roll for money (both teams, will be rolled for by the league administrator, and a penalty of 25% will happen for the forfieting team). This means both teams have a chance to advance their players and teams, but neither are held behind the rest of the league.

Blood Bowl Standard Bearer

New Standard Bearer: Pulp City

Pulp City is a great new game that pits super heroes against super villains in an old-school pulp setting.  Players assemble their own team of heroes or villains, as well as side-kicks and minions, and battle it out for the fate of the world.  Pulp City features some really fun rules, including the abilities to fly, throw scenery, and create your own minions.  We are working on a great board to play Pulp City on, and we now have a Pulp City Standard Bearer: Tim.

Tim will be making himself available to teach new players the game, and he will begin working on some fun events in the future for Pulp City players at Black Knight Games.  If you have any questions at all you can email him, or contact him through the forum.  All of Tim’s info can be found on the Pulp City Standard Bearer page.

So give the game a try, it is fun, different, and doesn’t require a huge investment to play!
