Call to Arms: Infinity

INF - Call to Arms 2013

If you haven’t tried Infinity yet, you should!  Infinity is a tactical miniatures game set in a high-tech sci-fi universe.  The game is quickly gaining traction at the store, and is probably the fastest growing game at Black Knight Games.  We are working on a great premium city table to play it on, and we are offering a great opportunity to get started with Infinity: a Call to Arms army-building league!  Typical forces are only about 5-10 models, so painting that up in the deadline should be a cinch.  The other great thing about Call to Arms is that is gives you a chance each week to meet up with the other participants to assemble, paint, and play together.  This is great for building a community of gamers – so expect to see Infinity flourishing at BKG in the months to come!  Join Now!

sm BK Painting Mini

When: Call to Arms: Infinity 2013 begins on Monday, August 12th – but you can sign up now!

Entry Fee: $65.00

Deadline: Sunday, September 15th, 12:00pm

You Get: $75.00 worth of miniatures for the army.  You can put this credit towards anything that helps you get the army finished, including paint, tools, flock, etc.  Just by signing up you get a deal!

Victory Conditions: It is the goal of all participants to complete a 300 point Infinity force from scratch.  If the force is completed by the deadline they will be eligible for a cut of the Victory Pool prize!  Participants must also attend a minimum of two Call to Arms Events during that time.  There will be at least one Call to Arms event each week.

Victory Pool: Black Knight Games will put $5 in Store Credit per participant in to a Victory Pool.  This pool will be split among the participants that complete the victory conditions by the deadline.

Armies:  Armies must be a legal 300 point Infinity force.  The miniatures used for the force may be new (either from your entry fee start-up, or bought separately) or they may be miniatures you already have.  If you wish to use miniatures you already owned before the Call to Arms began you must show the BKG staff that they are not yet painted (either in person or send us a picture).

Call to Arms Events: Each week we will run Call to Arms events (often on Sunday, but not always).  These will be a mix of things from painting-groups, to gaming, to special scenarios.  Each participant must attend at least two Call to Arms events before the deadline to satisfy the victory conditions.  The Call to Arms events will give you a great opportunity to meet, play, and paint with other gamers at BKG that are working on Warhammer armies too.  Together we will motivate each other to get these armies done!

Summer of Terrain Blog 01: Seven Years

Now that the move is over and we are fine-tuning things here I finally have the chance to begin a project that has been seven years in the making.

Seven years ago Black Knight Games was not in our exciting new location, it wasn’t in the original location, it wasn’t even a registered business.  Seven years ago Black Knight Games was a dream I had, that I was actively working towards.  I was living in Ottawa working as a manager at Games Workshop and taking night classes in the hopes that I might learn something useful about opening my own shop (I didn’t). I had this idea about what I wanted my store to be, it was clean, spacious, and had a fun environment.  People could play all kinds of games in the shop, but our specialty was to be wargames.  And one thing was certain: we would have AMAZING terrain for those games.

Working at Games Workshop I had acquired a love of really nice scenery, and I had a knack for making it too.  I knew that no matter what my store’s scenery would impress…I was wrong.  Turns out opening a business is hard work, and when you are dealing with mandatory things like ordering inventory, opening a bank account, and painting the walls the fun stuff like store terrain falls to the back of the cue.  So, we ended up with some great pieces, but mostly quick and dirty and functional terrain.  It didn’t match, there wasn’t a great theme to it, but it would do.

Until now.  Now that we have moved, we have upgraded pretty much everything here at Black Knight Games.  We have more space, we have more shiny, and the shop is much closer to the dream I had seven years ago.  So now it is time to dust off my old goal of having amazing terrain for the shop.  I am declaring this the Summer of Terrain!  My goal is that by summer’s end (September 21st) that we will have purged all the old ‘good enough’ terrain, and replaced it with themed sets, matching terrain, and premium tables.  Every week I will be scheduling myself and another staffer to work on new tables, updating terrain, and adding new stuff – and I plan to document it all here so that you can get as excited about the new scenery as I am, and so you can see the process for yourselves.

Justin’s Infinity Table

There is a lot we are planning to do, but you’ve got to start somewhere and to me the natural starting point is with the terrain and tables that we owe to our generous BUILDER and LANDSCAPER perk-holders from our fundraiser. This will give you a chance to watch our progress as we fulfill the requests of our perk-holders as well adding some transparency to the process.

The first project I will be working on is the first Premium Table.  Premium tables are special display tables that will be set up all the time, allowing us to do all sorts of things we can’t do with usual modular tables.  The first premium table was claimed by Justin who wanted us to address our lack of terrain for Infinity.  He wanted a congested city with lots of levels, and lots of cover and terrain.  This kind of project is a perfect use of a Premium table as Infinity requires more complex terrain elements than a table for 40K or Warmachine, so I couldn’t wait to sink me teeth in to it.

Initial inspiration came from the idea of a crowded, high-tech sci-fi city like in the picture to the right, and movies like Blade Runner, Minority Report, or A.I..  I also really liked the idea of tying elements of Time Square in with advertisements everywhere.  Billboards and signs would be a fun way of taking this table to the next level and playing with the lines of sight.  After exploring websites of companies that deal in infinity-style scenery it became clear that an affordable and very detailed style of terrain, using laser-cut MDF, was very common.  So I have scoured the internet and ordered from five different companies, acquiring a great selection of buildings.  I have also snagged a bunch of great little details like com-panels, furniture for inside the buildings, phone booths, and sci-fi vehicles.  Honestly I may have gone a bit overboard, but truthfully it’s for a good cause as our Infinity players have been forced to bodge together terrain scraps up until now.

I have given the design to Fred who will make us the frame and base of the table which will have two levels to it, as well as a tunnel.  Total price tag so far: $725.00.

Join me next week when we begin to put the terrain together, and hopefully have the base table built!  I will also share details on the layout.

I hope you enjoy following our progress as we quest to have the terrain our gamers deserve!

Infinity: Call to Arms

C2A Infinity 2013

Call to Arms is, in my opinion, the very best way to start an army or game system.  Participants get a deal just for signing up, saving them money.  They get an incentive to work at the army and get it painted, which is something most of us benefit from.  And, they get to build-up along-side others at the same pace – giving them instant opponents!

For our next Call to Arms army building league we will be turning to Infinity.  This time however we are changing up the format for Call to Arms somewhat after listening to customer recommendations.  This time rather than having an online journal, that was sometimes slow to be updated, and that participants didn’t often enjoy publishing to, we will try something different.  Part of the fun of Call to Arms is that you are building your army simultaneous to others, creating an instant community.  So this time we will be running a weekly league event every Sunday for participants to meet up, play some games, and check in on everyone else’s progress.

Entry Fee: $60.00

You Get: $70.00 towards miniatures for the contest (yes just for signing up you get a deal!), and the opportunity for more through the victory pool.

Begins: Now! (Feb 28th)

Registraition Ends: Friday, April 5th

Deadline: Sunday, April 14th

Victory Conditions: Each player must try to complete a legal 200pt Infinity force. In addition, the participant must attend at least two Infinity Gaming events by the deadline (which may include the final deadline event). Infinity gaming events will run every Sunday between now and the deadline.  If you are unable to attend on any of the Sundays you can contact us to arrange another time and place to get a game in.

Victory Pool: In addition to the deal that you get right off the top, Black Knight Games will be putting $5.00 into a Victory Pool for each participant. Anyone that completes their force (fully painted & based) by the deadline, and has participated in at least two gaming events, will be given an even share of the Victory Pool.

YuJingEngineersHoloInfinity Gaming Events: Every Sunday between now and the deadline we will be running an Infinity Gaming Event from 12:00 – 4:00.  These events are open to everyone, not just Call to Arms participants.  During these events we will have unique Infinifty scenarios, run by the staff.  These events will be a great way to learn your army, and the rules if you are a beginner.  For veterans it’s an opportunity to play more/new players, and just get some games in!

The final event will be on the deadline (Sun, April 14th) and will involve a similar gaming event as well as a final tally to see who has finished and who will get a share of the victory pool.

If a player is unable to participate in at least two of the Sunday events they can contact us and arrange another time to get a game of Infinity in with another opponent.  Please give adequate notice for this!

Armies: Forces must be a legal. Participants may use the miniatures that they have gotten with their entry fee, as well as miniatures that they already own as long as they are not already painted, or they may buy additional miniatures. If participants wish to use miniatures they already own they must prove that the miniatures are not finished beforehand.

So heed this Call to Arms today, and get your futuristic Infinity force on the table and painted!

Demo Day Recap and Upcoming Events

Wow!  Let me just start this off by saying this year’s demo day was a huge success.  Demonstrators for almost twenty different game systems taught an overwhelming number of new players.  We raffled off a $50 Gift Card and a couple of $20 Gift Cards to a few happy gamers.  To top it all off, we all had a lot of fun doing it.  If you missed this year, mark next year on your calendar well in advance as this is an event not to miss.  If you’re still wondering about a game you didn’t get a chance to have demoed, contact one of our Standard Bearers to set up a private tutorial.

For all of you out there who learned about a new game and are excited to play it, here are the next steps:

Players who tried out one of our TCGs, World of Warcraft the card game has a weekly WoW Battleground day, every Tuesday.

Our Pokemon league runs on Monday nights, and today marks the first release event run at Black Knight Games.  This new set is an exciting one, as a lot of the old favorites are making a return.

The Magic: the Gathering league for Return to Ravnica just kicked off again on Mondays as well.  We run multiple tournaments for Magic, with our Friday Night Magic events running every (you guessed it) Friday Night.  If you’re new to the game of Magic and want to start playing and collecting at the same time, our Drafts held on alternating Fridays are the best way to get involved.

Our major miniature games were not forgotten at demo day.  Warmachine and Hordes demos were popular, as always.  If you’re excited about picking up a Warmachine/Hordes Battlegroup we have the perfect opportunity: a journeyman league at BKG!  Starting on December 27th Black Knight will be hosting a journeyman league.  Entry is $25, which you get as credit toward Warmahordes purchases during the league.  Details will follow, so check back here.

For players excitied to start 40K or Warhammer Fantasy, we have a great tournament scene here and events scheduled every month.  Our next 40K tournament is a great one to bring a friend to, the ever popular 40K Doubles! (set for December 15th)  December’s WFB event is 1000 points and will involved a hero who gains power throughout the event.  Come on out on the 29th and Assemble the Chosen.

One of my favorite aspects of Demo day is the opportunity to show off some of our smaller-scale, skirmish games.  Will, one of our seasoned gamers, demoed Malifaux all day, a Victorian game of Gothic magic and terror.

Meanwhile Jim showed off Infinity, a game that just released an exciting campaign book.  I have an Infinity crew and always felt what the game needed was exciting scenario play, and now it has it.

Mykk was showing of Dropzone Commander (now in stock at BKG).  This 15mm skirmish game launched to fantastic praise and success, but low availability.  Now that it’s finally in stock and we’ve finished our first Call to Arms for it, players were excited to play it on Saturday.  With our Retake the Cradle Worlds DZC league starting Nov 20th, there’s never been a better time to pick up this new hotness.

I spent the day showing Blood Bowl to players and had a lot of fun.  Season Two for Blood Bowl is starting in January, so anyone keen to get involved should sign up in the store.  We will be collecting a minor entry this season to cover the cost of a new pitch and some sweet dice for all involved.  Sign up now while there are still spots!

Tim plays games. Rawr!

The last game I want to talk about has been a real hit here at BKG  — X-Wing!  We have a tournament day coming up that we’ve moved from December 8th to December 22nd to let us offer the new Slave 1 and Millennium Falcon as prizes.  If this game continues to grow in popularity we have a league planned for the new year.

We also had demos for Flames of War, Quarriors, Dominion, IKRPG, Pathfinder, and Dystopian Wars, but the day was so busy I don’t even have a chance to check them out.

Check back here regularly for updates on all of the above.  If you have a question or comment about anything happening at BKG feel free to email us or, better yet, post something up for discussion on our forums.

Call to Arms: Infinity Results

The Infinity Call to Arms has come to a close.  Check out the C2A webpage for all of the details!  Of the fourteen brave participants we had eight victorious participants.  All of them now have a nice new Infinity force, fully painted, that they can proudly play games with.  In addition to the pride that comes with success all eight got to split the Victory Pool evenly, gaining some store credit for their efforts.

If you are interested in joining a Call to Arms army building league now is your chance!  The Warhammer Call to Arms begins now, so get those brushes going!

Congrats to the winners!

Call to Arms Update

There is only three days remaining for participants to not only finish their Infinity force, but to submit their journal entries!  With a nice prize pool to be split by the winners, anyone that hasn’t finished yet needs to lock themselves in a room with their minis and paint!  Well…actually, that might not be safe…make sure you have ventilation.

Registration has begun for our Warhammer Call to Arms event as well!  Be sure to sign up and give yourself enough time to paint that beautiful horde of minis!  This will be the first event in the first ever Warhammer season of Knights of the Realm, so make sure to join in and claim those KotR points right away!

Infinity: The Teseum Conflict League

Black Knight Games will be running an Infinity League at the beginning of March.  Details to come!  The league will run from the beginning of March, to the end of April.

When: TBD March 2012
