Age of Sigmar: Tournament

Our first Warhammer Age of Sigmar tournament using the points from the GHB went great, and everyone agreed we should do more – so here is our next!

When: Saturday, December 10th, 11:00am (Registration begins at 10:30am)

Entry Fee: $20.00 ($16.00 for Stronghold Members) – Includes Pizza lunch

Rounds: 3 Rounds, 2 Hours & 20mins/Round. Scenarios: Take & Hold (p.110), Blood & Glord (p.111), and Border War (p.113) – All scenarios from the General’s Handbook.

Bring: Your army, your rules, dice, two copies of your army list.

Armies & Guidelines:
Forces will be up to 2000 points, using the ‘Pitched Battle’ rules on p. 106 in the General’s Handbook. Forces must follow the minimums for a Battlehost force (1-6 Leaders, 3+ Battleline units, 0-4 Artillery, 0-4 Behemoths).

Players may set aside any amount of points as ‘Reinforcement Points’ (p. 108 Generals Handbook). It is from their Reinforcement Points that players may summon, or otherwise add units to the game – units added in this way DO NOT need to be decided beforehand, so players can draw from any legal miniatures they have on hand – and may even use miniatures that had died earlier in the game.

Forces must be composed exclusively from models from one of the four Grand Alliances (Order, Chaos, Death, & Destruction), and may either take Alliance Abilities from their Grand Alliance, or from their Battletome.

Warscroll Detachments may be taken, however you must pay the additional points for them from the Points section in the General’s Handbook.

Prizes: We will provide prizes for the Best General, Best Sportsman, and Best Presentation in the form of store credit (based on attendance).

Age of Sigmar Call to Arms: Jay’s Journal

Jay HeadshotWith the insanity that was the Black Friday weekend now past I can take a moment and get planning my own Age of Sigmar Call to Arms force.

For those who aren’t familiar, Call to Arms is my favorite way to start an army for a game.  In a Call to Arms we get loads of players all starting up forces for the same game at the same time.  With a bunch of great events to encourage us to complete out armies we all work away learning our armies, and painting them up, with the goal of all finishing by a certain deadline.  The end result is that we get a bunch of excited players all playing new painted armies at the same time – it’s truly a fresh start for any game.

We only do Call to Arms a couple times a year, so now that it is Age of Sigmar’s turn I knew I had to get right involved.  I’ve been playing Warhammer since I was 12, and it’s always had a spot in my hobby-heart.

Building to a Theme

I have always been a player that has placed theme above all else.  While there is nothing wrong with building an army around rules you like, my true love has always been to tell a story with the army – it’s something that I feel really helps everyone get into the spirit of the game.

For my army I am going with a Forces of Destruction army, with a Forest Goblin theme!  I have, over the course of a couple of years, accumulated lots of forest goblin miniatures, and now I have the chance to finally use them!  My forest goblins will focus on their orky spider god, and everything about the army will involve spiders, and webbing all over the place on the bases.

How I Will Pull ot Off

When building an army to a theme you will often feel limited with the options available to you.  For example, there are only three forest goblin units: Arachnorok Spiders, Spider Riders, and Boss of Gigantic Spider.  I could certainly just go with those units, but I find it more fun to expand the army a bit further – and to do that I will need to examine other options.

I want to stick with Forces of Destruction, because that will keep the army legal for competitive play.  I could just throw in some Savage Orcs (after all they would look like appropriate allies), but I really just want to stick with a goblin tribe.  So, I am left with looking at other goblin units that I can make look like forest goblins.

Right away I decided I wanted to have some goblins on foot – so I will run with some grots.  There are two grot units, and I have chosen the Night Goblin ones because they have an option for netters in the unit – which I really feel fits with the spider-web-thing.  Forest Goblins on foot – check.

I also want to add some support units.  I like squigs, but their inclusion might take away from the whole spider theme – perhaps I will make some spider-squigs somehow?  The Arachnarok spider comes with a catapult, which I will not be using.  It also comes with a shaman on top with spidery webbing that is really reminiscent of the Doom Diver.  Maybe I will add some kind of forest goblin catapult, or forest goblin doom diver to the mix.

The Wow Factor

Because the theme is so important to me, it’s always been my goal for other players to have a bit of a ‘wow look at that!’ moment when they first see my army.  Having a unique theme, and a well painted army will always get you pretty close to that, but it’s also a good idea to think about what might be something aesthetically that you can do to set your army apart – to make it memorable.  It can be many things: a bold or unique colour scheme, a beautiful display board, a particularly impressive centerpiece model, some painting detail that really catches the eye (like impressive banners, free-handed tattoos, or heradlry for example).

In my case I have decided that I want to really go hard on the bases.  Forest goblins obviously come from a cluttered forest landscape, and the spider-factor just keeps screaming at me to cover logs, mushrooms, and shrubs with some impressive spider webbing.  So that it my plan!

Give It to Me Straight Doc, What Are My Odds!?

When beginning a Call to Arms, or any project, it’s important to be optimistic about your chances of success.  Will I be able to get this army done by the deadline?  Well I am known for being slow, and abandoning projects…  But, I have also completed both the Warmachine and Warhammer 40,000 Call to Arms challenges over the past year or so – so I feel good.  Yeah it’s Christmas, yeah I’ve got three kids, and yeah I have excuses – but I’ll put my odds at 90% to finish – who wants to bet me!?

Join Me (My Spiders are Hungry)!

Whether you are new to Age of Sigmar, or an established player, I highly recommend joining in to the Call to Arms experience.  It’s my absolute favorite way to build an army, and it’s only made better the more people join in.  So consider signing up for Call to Arms today!  Don’t worry, I promise my spiders are friendly (ish)!

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Call to Arms

A Call to Arms army building league is the biggest combination of events that we can do for a miniatures game  In a Call to Arms participants all begin an army at the same time, with the goal of completing the army by a certain deadline.  To encourage participants we will be running great events throughout the league, we will have incentives for everyone to participant and finish their army, and at the end we will have a big party to celebrate everyone’s accomplishment!

Building Your Army:

In our Age of Sigmar Call to Arms players aim to complete a legal 1500 point army of Age of Sigmar using the General’s Handbook army building guidelines.  Participants can use any unpainted miniatures that they have access to (assembled, and even primed is fine), however they should show a staff member, or send us pictures to prove it’s not painted for any miniatures that weren’t bought during the C2A.

Rewards:

In Call to Arms players are rewarded for their participation and accomplishments in the form of Muster Points.  Players will get a Call to Arms tracking sheet when the Call to Arms begins where they will track their Muster Points.  Muster Points can be earned in many ways, and spent at any time for a variety of rewards – it’s up to each player!

Registration: Participants can join in two ways:

Option 1: Pay a $40 entry fee
Option 2: Pay a $20 entry fee and buy either a Start Collecting Bundle, an Age of Sigmar Starter Set, or if none of these suits your army talk with the staff about making another comparable purchase instead.

Important Dates:

Registration Opens: Today (Nov 8).  Players may begin assembling any models they wish, and they may begin painting Battleline units.
Call to Arms Begins: Thursday, November 17.  Players may now begin painting all their miniatures.
Deadline: Sunday, February 5th.  We will have an after-hours party to celebrate!

BKG Game Camps this Summer!

Game Camp 2

This summer we will be hosting five weeks of summer Game Camps in three different categories!  Game Camps are week-long days camps, that focus on teaching a new gamer the basics of their preferred game, giving them the tools they need to play, and a beginner package in product to get them there.  Participants get focused attention from one of our expert games instructors in a fun, casual, and safe environment.  Select from our three types of Game Camp for more information:

Game Camp MTG

Game Camp Pokemon

Game Camp AoS

Camps will have attendance caps, so the sooner you are able to register the better!  Enjoy your summer with us, and learn all about one of these great games with out Game Camps!

Black Knight Games Game Nights

BKG Game Night

Thumbs UpIn addition to the many tournaments, leagues, and special events that we run at Black Knight Games we also host many weekly Game Nights.  Games Nights are important because they provide a specific time and place for our various gaming communities to meet and grow on a regular basis.  In the past our game nights were simply designated days where players from each community would meet, but now we are making them a bit more organized, and are rewarding our participants for helping us establish solid times where players can be sure to find an opponent.

When a player attends a Game Night they will sign in with the Staff.  Any Stronghold Members that do so will be entered in to a monthly draw where five of our lucky participants that month will win a $10.00 Credit at BKG!

Game Nights are FREE, and are open to all interested players.

Players are still welcome to play other games on these nights, and can certainly play these games on other nights, however only the listed games are official Game Night games on their designated nights.  Some games, like Magic: the Gathering will have regular nights with tournaments on them (like FNM), these are their own event type, and do not fall under the ‘Game Night’ category.

Announcing Warhammer 40,000 Call to Arms!

40K Call to Arms

After a long deliberation, and sorting through dozens of survey responses Black Knight Games is proud to announce our first Call to Arms event in almost two years: Warhammer 40,000!  Call to Arms is an army-building league where many participants join in and build a new (or expand on an old) army from scratch!

This Call to Arms will feature all three of Tim, Mykk, and Jay, and is open to anyone looking to start, get back in to, expand upon, or in any other ways build an army for Warhammer 40,000.  The league will include incentives for those that finish, plenty of gaming and hobby support events, a party at the end, and will lead in to a map-based league at the finish.  If you’ve ever wondered what it would look like for Black Knight Games to go all-out on a game for a few months you are about to find out!  More information will come shortly, but we can announce that the event will begin on November 14th – which just so happens to be the release date of all the new Horus Heresy stuff (coincidence?…).

Line

We had tons of interest in the Call to Arms survey, and while we decided to begin with Warhammer 40,000 we got to see just how many people were interested in Warmachine & Hordes, as well as Age of Sigmar – and it was a ton of people.  So we have some great news for the members of those communities as well!
WMH 2

We are happy to announce that we will be beginning a Challenge Board league very shortly at Black Knight Games.  A challenge board is a player ranking where participants have a personalized tag on the board, and they work their way to the top by challenging and defeating their rivals.  If you can last at the top of the board for long enough you will earn a prize!  The Challenge Board League will be a great way for Warmachine & Hordes players to add a little something to their games on game nights, and at other times as well!

We are also very happy to announce that Warmachine & Hordes will be our next Call to Arms event, and we are already beginning plans for it.  So lock in April 17th on your calendar and prepare to build your army!  Jay has already made a big bet with Tim to ensure he’s got plenty of motivation to finish (beyond just beating Tim).

Warhammer AoS

Age of Sigmar is still a relatively new game at Black Knight Games, and we intend to support it well!  We have now added an Age of Sigmar game night to the calendar; beginning this month Age of Sigmar players can gather at 6pm every Thursday!  We have also scheduled our next Battle of the Scrolls event for Sunday, November 29th – so gather ye scrolls and do your best to defeat Jay and earn eternal glory…and some cool prizes too!

Age of Sigmar: Battle of the Scrolls III

AoS Battle of the Scrolls III

It has only been a couple of weeks, but we are all ready for the next Battle of the Scrolls event this Sunday!  This time we are upping the number of scrolls and wounds you can use so please double check the Army Composition section.

Entry Fee: $10.00 ($8.00 for Members)

Random Prizes: We will have a bunch of fun prizes to give away.  Each player will get 3 ballots to try and win prizes and will earn another ballot for each game played, and for each victory.  The player with the most victories will get a $20.00 BKG Gift Card in addition to the ballots they’ve earned.  At the end of the event we will draw for each winner and pass out the prizes!  The more participants we have the more prizes we will draw.

Open Format Tournament: Players are able to play as many times as they wish during the course of the event.  Come up to report the result and we will assign you a new opponent.  Players that arrive late or need to leave early are more than welcome!  This event is all about us all getting games in with the new Age of Sigmar rules, enjoying ourselves, and winning some cool stuff!

Age of Sigmar Army Composition: While Age of Sigmar is designed for great casual play already we will be using some fairly simple army guidelines to make sure that each force is somewhat balanced for this event.  Please have a look over our Army Building Guidelines document and assemble your forces accordingly.  Please let us know what you think/thought of these rules so that we can improve them for our next event!
