In-Depth Hobby Tutorial: How to Make Great Bases

We are often asked when the best times are to come in an learn some things about painting, or hobbying.  And, while we are always happy to have you pop in, we haven’t done enough hobby-focused events to spread some of the expertise our staff and volunteers have.  So we are creating a new event type that we intend to run often: In-Depth Hobby Tutorials.

Tutorial Synopsis: In our first tutorial, Jay will get in to how to make eye-catching basing schemes for your armies.  We will discuss many techniques, and be hands-on with them, to get you comfortable with materials like green stuff, rolling pins, flocks, foliage, scatter, tufts, sands, cork, and more!  Jay will explain the benefits of having a well-based army, and we will go over how to create a basing scheme that isn’t too time-consuming, yet really completes the look.

When: Saturday, August 25, 12:00pm – 4:00pm

Entry Fee: $15.00 -or- 8 Hero’s Rewards – or- FREE if you are in the Age of Sigmar Call to Arms

Event Cap: We will only take a maximum of 12 participants, so register now if you are interested!

You Will Get: In addition to the four hours of expert instruction, we will be supplying a hand-out for you to take home, as well as all the building materials you will need for the seminar.  You will be able to take home the bases you create.

Paint With Jay Every Saturday

Paint with Jay

One of the most fun experiences I have with miniature gaming is getting together with a group of people and just working on our projects together.  We don’t need to be painting the same game, or even working on the same kind of project, but just the act of hanging out socially and hobbying with others really provides motivation and fun.  Participants chat, share ideas, and teach each other techniques they’ve learned.  One might be assembling their new Skaven force, while another paints up their Warmachine Colossal.

The thing that works so well about an open experience like this is that it is inclusive.  One person might be painting for the first time, trying to add some colour to some miniatures in a board game they own, while another is a seasoned expert working on the next in a long line of miniatures.  These people can still add something to the experience of the other despite the fact they they are coming from different places.

To promote this kind of inclusive hobby experience I will be meeting pretty much every single Saturday at noon here at the store and working on painting, assembling, terrain, or other hobby projects.  I invite you to join me.  It doesn’t matter what you want to work on, just show up, hang out, and hobby with me and others.  I will be happy to share my 20+ years of painting and hobby experience, and I’m sure that others will too.  We can all have fun, get some minis done, and learn new tricks and techniques along the way.

Occasionally I might run something a little more organized, like a seminar or something, but mostly it will be us hanging out at the same table painting.

When: Saturdays at 12:00pm – 4pm (or longer).

Entry Fee or Requirements: None

Bring: Whatever you’d like to work on, and whatever paints, glue, brushes or tools you need.  If you have nothing I can lend you a brush and paints, or for those starting from zero I can even give you a mini to try painting for the first time!

So join me Saturdays and lets do some painting!

Space Marine Chapter Design Contest

SM Chapter Design Contest

Black Knight Games will be holding a Space Marine Chapter Design Contest and you are invited to submit your own original chapter idea!

How it Works: Participants can join by putting a deposit of $5.00 in and getting a FREE Space Marine Figure.  They assemble the figure and paint in in their newly invented Chapter’s colours.  Then they submit a one page chapter design along with their painted miniature by the deadline, at which point they get their $5.00 back in Store Credit.

Deadline: All submissions must be made by Saturday, October 3rd (which just happens to be a 40K Tournament!)

Submit: Players submit their design for a chapter, which includes the painted space marine, as well as a single page chapter design, which can include anything they wish, like a chapter symbol, history, a short story, combat style and anything else they can fit on to a single side of a page!

Prizes: There will be three winners, and three runners up, with one winner and one runner up for each of the following categories: Best Overall Design, Best Painted, and Best Fluff.  Winners will win fun prizes!

So grab a marine today, and show us your creativity in the Space Marine Chapter Design Contest!

The Great Terrain Build!

The Great Terrain Job

This Saturday we will be spending the entire day building new terrain, fixing up old terrain, and we need YOU to help out with The Great Terrain Job!

Entry Fee: FREE!  In fact you can earn some cool stuff just by joining in!

How it Works: We will be spending the entire day improving the scenic terrain at Black Knight Games, and anyone is welcome to join us.  Each participant will get a Great Terrain Job points sheet to track what they have done, and what achievements they have accomplished (these can include each hour spend helping, donating a terrain piece, attending a seminar etc.).  For every three points a participant gets they earn a ballot to put towards one of three Prize Draws!

Seminars: In addition to the constant building, and painting of terrain Jay will be hosting three seminars to teach participants some new techniques!  These are also free, and you may attend any that you find interesting:

11:00am – Building Foamcore Buildings

1:30pm – Table-Building Basics

4:00pm – Airbrushing Terrain

We want YOUR help to make a BIG improvement to the terrain selection here at Black Knight Games, so join us on Saturday!!!

Jay’s Big Bet: Terrain Sets

A couple of months ago I initiated the first Jay’s Big Bet to finally get myself over the hump, and finish our Infinity Table.  At the time I bet the Infinity players of Black Knight Games that I could get the table completely finished by April, or I would have to give everyone a discount on Infinity for the month.  I am proud to say that I was victorious!  The table is complete, and our local players have been enjoying what is now a real centerpiece table.

Since I felt that the bet really did help me to stay motivated, I am doing it again.  This time my goal is not a single massive table, rather a series of matching sets of terrain.  I would very much like to begin getting our available terrain to a place where we have amazing premium tables like the Infinity one, as well as high quality matching scenery for the rest of the tables – rather than the hodge-podge mix of stuff we have now.

So to that end here is my next Big Bet!:

I must complete three new sets of terrain, one each month, for the next three months (including this one).  A set of terrain does not necessarily include a table, rather it is a set of terrain pieces that go together, and would make for enough terrain for one table.  The sets will be thematic in some way, which should add some nice variation to the every-day terrain we already have.  Each set must be done by the end of the month.

If I fail to complete a new set of terrain on any given month I will buy a fully painted set of terrain instead.

Either way our gamers get more nice scenery, so it’s Win-Win!  So let me know what you think, and let me know if you have any great ideas for future bets, or for the terrain I should make now!
