Stronghold Members: Get a Hero’s Reward for participating.

Format: 3 Rounds, 1000 points Doubles (Teams of 2). We will use the Best Coast Parings program to track.  Scenarios will be chosen from the ITC scenarios, rulebook, and/or Chapter Approved.  Deathclocks will be utilized.  This is not an ITC event.

Armies: We encourage our players to have all their models be WYSIWYG (What you see it what you get) to avoid possible confusion for your opponents. Simple conversions are allowed, but anything more extreme, or model substitutions, must be approved by the event organizer. We encourage you to always double check with us in advance before using non WYSIWYG models.

We WILL be using the new Space Marine Bolter rules that GW is beta testing.

Prizes: $20.00 per person (minus the cost of lunch) is all put towards the prize pool. Prizes given for Top three teams, best painted (individual) and best sportsmanship (team).

Teams:

  • Each team’s army is classified as the same army with the restriction of one faction per team removed. Each player’s individual army still has this restriction.
  • Maximum 2 detachments per player
  • Interactions for specific factions/abilities can work between ally armies providing they all contain the required key words. This does not mean you can name two different factions the same key word to try and circumvent this rule. (an ork weirdboy cannot use da jump on a unit of space marines even if the space marine chapter you chose to name them is “speed freaks”)
  • Unique Characters are unique to the entire team army (no armies with two Sly Marbos or two Magnus the Reds etc.)
  • Strategems can only be used once per team per phase and all command points are shared. (3 for battleforged + the amount generated by detachments in both players lists)

Tournament Guidelines:
The tournament will consist of 3 rounds, with 2.5 hours allotted for each round. Roll for turn 7 as normal. Chess clocks will be used (and supplied by the store). Each player will have 60 minutes on their clock at the start of each game. If you time out there will be no penalty points taken, but you cannot make any orders for the remainder of the game. Lists can be a maximum of 2,000 Points. Clash of Kings 2019 rules will be used. Armies from the main rulebook, Uncharted Empires book, and Twilight Kin lists may be used. New formations/units from Clash of Kings 2019. Historical armies are allowed. Army lists submitted by February 16, 2019 earn 5 bonus sportsmanship points and should be sent to alexander.kus@gmail.com.

I recommend using Easy Army KoW Army Builder to build your lists, which is available for free online at http://kow2.easyarmy.com/clash-of-kings-2018.aspx. If EasyArmy has not been updated with the 2019 rules by the week before, just make a spreadsheet version. You should bring 4 copies of your list (one for yourself, one for each opponent). This is an open list event.Models/Paint:

You are NOT required to have a painted army and no tournament points will be given for having a painted army, but there will still be a players choice best army award.

Sportsmanship:
This will be scored on a Pass/Fail system. Everyone starts with 10 Sportsmanship points. For each “Fail” you receive, 2 points will be deducted from your Sportsmanship score. If you Fail someone, please be prepared to explain your reasoning to the TO in detail. We are all here to have a good time.

At the end of Round 3, players will vote for their favorite opponent and second favorite opponent. Each vote for “Favourite Opponent” will add 2 points to their Sportsmanship score, and each vote for “Second Favourite opponent” will add 1 point to that player’s Sportsmanship score. The player with the highest Sportsmanship score will win the Winter’s Spirit

Award. In the event of a tie, the number of Favourite Opponent votes will be the tie-breaker, and the number of Second Favorite Opponent votes will be the second tie-breaker.

Terrain:
All tables will be set up prior to each round and will be the same for each round, for the whole field.

All tables will consist of:
2 hills, 2 forest, 2 blocking terrain, 2 difficult flat, 2 walls.Terrain Height is predetermined:

Forests – Ht 6
Blocking terrain – Ht 4
Hills – Ht 2
Walls – Ht 1 obstacle
Difficult flat – Ht 0

Ht 0 terrain only offers cover for units 50% inside of it. It does not give intervening cover.

Scoring:
We will be using the Blackjack Scoring System for this event. All of the information can be found here: http://clashofkingsau.com/blackjack/

The sheets are very easy to read and fill out once you see them, you won’t need to read over how it works if you don’t want to. I will review them with the group before starting.

Awards:

King of Winter:
This award is based off of the overall score (Tournament Points + Sportsmanship). In the event of a tie, attrition points will be used as the tie-breaker.

Behold Winter’s Majesty:
This award is voted on by the players. Whatever your favorite army is, for whatever reason (be it paint, theme) is the one you should vote for. Tie-breaker will be Sportsman-ship score.

Winter’s Spirit:
This award will go to the player that has the highest Sportsmanship score. Tie-breaker will be Favorite Opponent votes. Second tie-breaker is Second Favorite Opponent Votes. Third tie-breaker will be Tournament Points.

Blade of Ice:
This award will be given to the player with the most attrition points. Tournament points will be used as a tie breaker.

Melted Ice:
This award is given to the player with the lowest overall score. Lowest TP as tie breaker. Lowest Attrition back up tie breaker.

FNM: Quickdrafts Beta Test & Regular Draft

Black Knights Games was approached by Wizards of the Coast to participate in a test-run for a new format called Quickdrafts.  Quickdraft is a popular format on MTG Arena, and WotC would like to find out if it would be popular in stores too, so they’ve connected with a selection of stores to test the format and get feedback from the players and the store.

We ran a poll on our Facebook Page to see if our players would be interested in testing it, or if they’d rather stick with what was working, and got well over a hundred responses from our players.  It was as close as possible, with almost a perfect split one way or the other depending on the moment you checked.  Ultimately it became clear that there was a good number of players who would love to trial something new, and there were a good number who’d rather keep things steady.  So rather than picking, we’re doing both!

Play Quickdrafts -or- Regular Drafts every Friday in February: Each and every Friday Night Magic, you will have the option of drafting either in a regular draft pod, or in a Quickdrafts pod.  Simply Let us know which, and we’ll add you to the correct one.

Mostly the Same: The entry fee and prize pool will be the same.  Both groups will earn FNM promos.  Both groups will count towards the Winter Championship Season, and 2019 Invitational equally.

One minor downside for regular drafts: Because we have to split these up (and because of the way WotC is collecting data on Quickdrafts) the regular pod will be run and submitted as a regular MTG tournament, not as an FNM – this means slightly fewer plainswalker points, which most players aren’t too concerned with.

What is different about Quickdrafts?:

  • Matches are single-game (instead of best 2 out of 3).
  • Rounds are 20 minutes (instead of 50).
  • We will play 6 rounds (instead of 3).
  • Players get a “free” mulligan each game (this helps mitigate mana problems in your first draw)
  • Each match win will be worth 0.5 wins in our Seasonal Championship standings (so 6 matches = max 3 pts, just like draft)

Report your experience to Wizards: After the month-long test run WotC will contact us, and our Quickdrafts players, and ask what they thought about the format.  We will actually get to give proper feedback, and help them decide whether or not to adopt this format for the future!
