MTG: Dragons of Tarkir Prerelease Weekend!

MTG - Dragons of Tarkir Prerelease

It’s that time again: Prerelease Weekend!  Dragons of Tarkir is a very exciting set with two new Planeswalkers, a Reborn Tarkir, and of course the main event – Dragons!  Dragons of Tarkir is a bit special because it is the last ‘Third Set’ Magic will see for a long time.  It is also a better set to invest in than most Third Sets have been since it also begins the new pairs-style rotation, which means the cards will be in Standard for longer than usual.  What better way to begin your exploration of this new set than our always-fun, Prerelease Weekend!?

You Get: A Prerelease Pack which includes six boosters: Four Dragons of Tarkir boosters, one Fate Reforged booster, and Seeded Pack that includes your promo card and is geared towards your clan.  Everyone also gets a Hero’s Reward which can be used towards several cool prizes, and a spindown dice.

The Prerelease Packs are each aligned with two-coloured Dragon Clans.  First choice of clans will be given to in order to players in the order they pre-registered/registered for the event.

Prizes: For each participant in our Dragons of Tarkir prereleases we will add 2 Dragons of Tarkir Booster Packs to the prize pool.  Prizes are given to the top players based on their record (example all 5-0s get the same prize, all 4-1s get the same prize etc.).  In addition we will present several door prizes at each event randomly given out to players that complete the tournament.

Tarkir Dragonfury Game: Wizards always likes to make the Prereleases a special event, and to add to everyone’s fun and excitement we have the Dragonfury game.  Dragonfury is a themed bowling-style game where players roll their spindown die in an effort knock over the most points-worth of pieces.  Each player will have 2 chances to roll during the event.  There are some special promo cards to be given out to players that do well, and we will track the overall winner of each prerelease as well as for the entire weekend for additional prizes!

If you would like to practice your Dragonfury throwing-arm you may do so throughout the FNMs leading up the the midnight release!

Prereleases are some of our absolute favorite events.  The atmosphere is always fun, there are so many people all exploring the new set for the first time, the prizes are top-notch, and it just makes for an amazing weekend.  So join in, and good luck!

Magic and the Canadian Dollar

Exchange Rate

After serious consideration Black Knight Games has decided that the time has come to increase our price on Magic: the Gathering sealed product.  This is not a decision that comes lightly, and is one that we put off for as long as possible – probably too long.  While this certainly will garner some moans, and some initial anger in some of our loyal customers it is a decision that we have to make, and one that we suspect other sellers will make in the near future.  Our goal is to make this transition as transparent as possible, and to answer any questions that we can.  Hopefully by being upfront and honest, you will be able to understand the need for this adjustment.

Our price for boosters packs will be changing to $4.99, which is slightly less than the Canadian equivalent of US MSRP of $3.99.  We’re maintaining the same percentage discount on booster boxes, which makes the new price of booster boxes $149.99.

Why?

There have been two major changes over the past year when it comes to selling Magic: the Gathering in Canada.  The first is that Wizards of the Coast raised prices to retailers by reducing the margin a bit at the end of 2014.  The second, and far more important change is that the Canadian dollar has plummeted compared to the US dollar (the currency that Magic is sold in).  These two changes have been very difficult for Canadian retailers of Magic: the Gathering as our profit margin has shrunk considerably.  Magic sealed product is now by far the lowest profit-margin range that we sell at Black Knight Games, which is problematic considering it’s also our number one selling range.

This new price still puts our prices slightly lower than buying from a US source.  $3.99 US x Todays Exchange Rate (1.28) = $5.11

When?

This change will go into effect on Friday, March 27th – the release date of the new set.  Any purchases or pre-orders made before then, including for boxes of the new set, will be made at the current price.  So if you are planning on buying a box of Dragons of Tarkir it would be a great idea to pre-order it before release day!  The price of the Pre-Release weekend will not be affected at all.

The Transition

We realize that a change like this to the core price of Magic will be difficult for some, and we are certainly not thrilled about it either.  For a time we recognize that some other stores will have lower prices than we will on booster packs and boxes.  Our business model has never been to simply have the lowest prices, but to offer the best gaming experience we can.  We put a lot of time and money into running great events and creating a comfortable and inviting space.  We certainly don’t begrudge any of our customers for looking out for their wallets and buying where they wish, but we do thank our customers for standing by us and helping us continue to offer the best in-store experience we can.

For the time being we will not change the way we run events – at all.  This includes the entry fee and the prize structure.  Please note that since we are going to continue using the old pricing for entry fees and prizes, that trade in prize-packs will still be valued at $4.  In time we will examine our events to figure out how to them fit into the new price structure, and we would value customer feedback.

What if the Canadian Dollar Bounces Back?

We are not simply looking for an excuse to raise prices.  Our goal is, and always will be, to offer our customers great product at a fair price with a margin that keeps us in business.  If the Canadian dollar bounces back, or if other factors make buying Magic more affordable, we will gladly revisit our pricing.

Feedback

It has taken us quite some time to reluctantly do what needs to be done.  We recognize that we are one of the first stores to make this transition, and that makes us a bit of a target for some.  We know there will be those that have questions, concerns, and thoughts about all of this.  The best course of action is to take part in a civil conversation with everyone that has interest in discussing things.  We will gladly discuss this on Facebook, in person, or by email with those interested.  As I said before, our goal is to be honest and transparent.

Email us, or call us and ask for Jay or Tim at 905-296-3401

Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to hearing from you and taking any feedback you wish to give.

Sincerely,

Jay Mason-Grant

Blood Bowl: BKBBL Season 7

Blood Bowl Season 7

Following the success of six amazing seasons of Blood Bowl at Black Knight Games we are proud to announce Season 7!  In Season 6 we saw the Karond Kar Reavers win it all. This year it could be you.

BB Champ Season 7This is a chance for the everyone to get in on the biggest hit since ‘Revenge of the Nerds’.  Season 7 will allow coaches to bring their teams from last season or previous season back for a chance to win a championship. If you’re a new coach or want to bring a new team in don’t worry a lot of coaches have started from scratch and done well. The league won’t have you pitted against the top teams in the league.. unless you’re lucky enough to make the playoffs.

Season 7 will kick off on March 28th.
It will cost $15 dollars if you do not own a pitch and 10$ if you do own a pitch.

The winner of Season 7 will win a special custom BKBBL Champion Board!

Coaches are expected to have their own team and rosters. If you haven’t signed up to the web page or have any questions please contact our Standard Bearer Tim Lawson.

Warhammer End Times Campaign – Last Chance!

End Times Campaign

Registration for our epic Warhammer End Times campaign was supposed to be the 1st of March, and we already have 18 excited players registered to participate.  Before making the final call on which factions/characters each player will take on we wanted to give one last opportunity for new players to join.  So if you would like to join you may still do so until the end of this weekend.

If you are on the fence just know that this is a very flexible league that allows you to play as much and when you wish.  We are also very much encouraging players to lend and borrow from each other to be able to use the special characters and the amount of points they need, so if you want to play we should be able to find you a way.  We already have 18 players – which is amazing – but with a few more players we will be able to give more participants their first choice of army/character.  We could definitely use more players for Beastmen, Bretonnia, Daemons of Chaos, Ogre Kingdoms, and Skaven in order to cover those factions a little better.  But, we especially need an Orcs & Goblins player since we don’t have a single one!

So if you would like to join in what will be a very special and unique campaign, one that we are putting a ton of time and effort in to making truly memorable, please register now!
