Warmachine & Hordes Journeyman League

WMH Journeyman League

Beginning in March and for six weeks following, BKG Warmachine and Hordes players will compete for prizes by earning league points.  We’ve hosted journeyman leagues twice before, but this one promises to be the best yet.  Bring your friends, bring your new faction, bring your old faction, and let’s get back to Warmachine and Hordes basics.

There are three types of league points: Game Points, Hobby Points, and Journeyman Points.  Game Points are earned for playing against other players in the league using that week’s rules.  Hobby Points are earned for painting models.  Journeyman Points are the total of Game Points and Hobby Points.

Each week, rules are set to restrict the size and style of players’ armies.  This helps to encourage an enjoyable environment for players getting used to the rules of the game.  While the league is aimed at that friend you’ve always wanted to teach warmachine to, it’s also perfect for a seasoned player to become an expert at the game essentials.  We have a ton of new or returning players this time, so try to play games against players you’ve never played before.  You cannot score a game against the same opponent twice in a row.

sm BK Steampunk v2How does it work?  You may play games any day of the week.  Each week the size of games played increases:

March 5th – March 11th
Battlegroup box set.  We are allowing any of the alternate battle boxes discussed in the league document, but no custom battle boxes.

March 12th – March 18th
15 point armies using all the contents of the week 1 battle box.

March 19th – March 25th
25 point armies using all the contents of the week 1 battle box.

March 26th – April 1st
25 point armies using all the contents of the week 1 battle box, but may include a warcaster swap.

April 2nd – April 8th
35 point armies using all the contents of the week 1 battle box, but may include a warcaster swap.

April 9th – April 16th (finale day)
35 point armies, and the list may be changed as much as you want all week

At the end of the six week league we’ll be giving out special Journeyman Badges to everyone achieving certain point levels, as well as badges for most hobby points, most game points, and top overall.

How do I earn Game Points?  Each win in a given week is worth 3 points, and a loss or a draw is worth 2 points.   You may play as many games in a week as you can fit in, but players may not score points for a game played against the same opponent until he plays a different opponent.

journeyman2014How are Hobby Points earned?  Players earn Hobby Points for painting models from their faction in the league.  These models do not have to be used at any time during a league game.  For a painted model to score Hobby Points, it must primed, basecoated, painted with a reasonable diversity of colour, and based.  Models are worth differing points based painting requirements as follows:

  • Warcasters, warlocks, warbeasts, warjacks, and solos: 3 points for a large-based model, 2 points for medium-based model, and 1 point for small-based model
  • Battle engines: 5 points
  • Colossals and gargantuans: 7 points
  • Units of two models: 2 points
  • Units of three to six models: 3 points
  • Units of seven or more models: 4 points
  • Units of only medium-based models: 1 additional point
  • Units of only large-based models: 2 additional points

How much does this cost to play?  $6 ($5 for Stronghold Members).

I still have questions.  Who do I ask?  A lot of the details are listed on the league document, but for anything not listed there, feel free to email me:  Tim (at) BlackKnightGames (dot) com

MTG: Casual Mondays

MTG Casual Mondays

Every Monday at Black Knight Games we have sanctioned casual pick-up games of Magic: the Gathering.  Beginning in March 2015 we will begin give Mondays a little more attention with organized weekly events in various casual Magic formats!  Players will always be welcome to play pick-up games, but now they will have the option of playing in an organized event as well.  We will be offering many formats to keep players on their toes including:

MTG Commander2The most popular casual format, Commander (also known as EDH) is a singleton format where players make a 100 card deck including a Commander (or General).  All of the rules for Commander can be found on the Commander Website.  We will run Commander in several formats including normal 1 0n 1, multiplayer, and Duel (the rules can be found HERE).

MTG - Tiny LeadersOne of the newest formats players are playing is Tiny Leaders, a Commander variant where players cannot include any cards with a converted mana cost of more than 3, and decks are only 50 cards.  This format makes for quicker matches (typically) than Commander, and strays away from many of the better cards in Commander.  The rules for Tiny Leaders can be found HERE.

MTG - Cube DraftCube is a format where a collection of open singleton cards are used to create draft packs.  Players then draft from these packs in the same way as a Booster Draft.  Each cube collection is different making each one its own unique game experience.  You can learn more about cube drafting at cubedrafting.com, and at Wizards’ Casual Format Page.  Since we need to have a Cube in order to run one of these events, and Cubes are often expensive investments, we will only run a Cube draft when a player volunteers the use of their Cube.  If you would like to volunteer your cube let us know, and we can schedule a Cube Draft event!

MTG - Jank DraftA Jank Draft is similar to a Cube draft in that we take a pre-set collection of cards and make draft packs for players to draft with.  The big difference is that these cards will be taken from our massive collection of bulk commons, uncommons, and rares.  In a Jank Draft we will design draft packs from our collection in advance, and players get to keep the cards they draft!  These cards will typically be of very little value, but it does allow players to play with older cards that are rarely ever used – making for a unique challenge.

So join us every Monday to try out these, and other, casual magic formats!

Warhammer: Monumental End Times League

End Times Campaign

We will be embarking on our most ambitious league ever.  The End is Nigh will be a Warhammer Fantasy league that seeks to put the End Times story arc in your hands.  Take on the roll of one of the most important players in the End Times and do your part to doom the world.

When: Players will have some time to plan out their forces, and register.  We don’t want to begin until the final Ends Times book has been released, and it will take some time to make each player a personalized league packet.  This league will not begin for a couple of months most likely, but we do need to begin planning it now.

How it will work: The End is Nigh will be a story-based league, allowing players to recreate the End Times story.  Each player will be given a league packet that includes all their prerequisites for the campaign.  The player playing as Nagash for example might be required to have 4000pts of Undead Legions troops, the Nagash and Manfred miniatures, and be available to play eight times during the eight week league.  The packet will list their opponents each week, as well as the scenario they will play, and what consequences the results will have.  It will be up to the individual players to select a time to play together, there is not set time.  Each week we will have a campaign update release showing the progress of the globe-spanning war.

Entry Fee: $20.00 ($10.00 for Stronghold Members)

Registration: Each player can now register to participate.  When a player registers they indicate which characters they are able and willing to play as.  They also indicate how involved they wish to be in the league.  Players indicate if they want to be very active, committing to a game every week for ten weeks, fairly active committing to 6-8 games over 10 weeks, or an occasional participant with only 4 games over 10 weeks.  With this information we will assign roles to each participant.

Registration Deadline: If you wish to be a part of the most impressive league we’ve ever run for any game, you will need to register by February 28th!

Possible Roles & Requirements: The following is a list of all the available rolls.  The list is divided in to four tiers, and characters will be used from the more important tiers first based on the number of participants.  Please pay close attention to the following roles and their requirements, and let us know all of the ones you would be able to commit to, as well as your favorites:

End Times Roles

So if this kind of epic campaign appeals to you, sign up now and give us a chance to plan it out and make it truly amazing!

MTG: Commander Tournament

MTG Commander Tournament fb

This Monday Black Knight Games will be hosting a 1 vs  1 Commander Tournament.  So, grab your generals and you mana rocks and join us!

When: Monday, February 9th, 6:00pm (Registration at 5:30pm)

Entry Fee: $6.00 ($5.00 for Stronghold Members)

Format: 1 on 1 Commander, 3 Rounds, No Cut

Prizes: For each participant we will add 1.5 booster packs to the prize pool to be split among those that win at least two games.  Players will get the same prize as those that finish with matching records, with the best records getting a better share of the prize pool.  This is the same method we use for Modern Nights, and FNM: Standard format tournaments.

Watch out for some upcoming news on what we will be doing with Monday nights beginning in March!
