Warhammer 40,000 Apocalypse is Coming!

The new 40K Apocalypse Book is coming out shortly.  The video indicates the date that the White Dwarf will reveal all, while the actual release date for Apocalypse will be July 13th.  This is perfect timing to get everyone excited about our Apocalypticon event which is only a couple of weeks later!

WMH: The Dawn Before the Con

Later this month ConBravo is coming to town.  Bravo is a convention that’s always been popular with anime goers, video gamers, and computer fans, but this year they’re playing host to the Syndicate folks who are running a Warmachine: Hardcore Tournament, Privateer Press sponsored.

And we aren’t going to let our players attend unprepared!  Come out to our first tournament in July and smash some metal against some monsters.  If you’re a new Warmahorde player or an old one, the fast timed-turns and ease of playing only one list make Hardcore a great format.  And Black Knight Games is going to send our top two players to the Hardcore event at the Con.  All you have to do is prove your worth!

Naturally, you’ll be proving that by beating your fellows at a BKG tournament on July 6th.  Hardcore events usually require fully painted lists, and ConBravo will be no exception, but on July 6th at BKG you’ll be able to try out the list you plan to play, even unpainted.  Alright folks, here are the details:

When: Sat, July 6th, 11:00am – 7:00pm.  We will be going four rounds and using timed turns and the Hardcore packet scenario.

Game Size: Games will be played with 35 points.  This is a single list event!

Entry Fee: $20.00 ($16 for Stronghold Members) per person, which includes two pop and pizza lunch.

Prizes: We’ll be handing out some cool round prizes, as well as store credit for Vanquisher (first overall), Mage Hunter (fewest models destroyed), and Executioner (most points destroyed).  Beyond that, first and second place players get tickets to the Showdown in Hammertown hardcore event at ConBravo later this month (July 27th).  See their website for details about this event!

Black Knight Games Anniversary Party

BKG 6th Anniversary

Black Knight Games has been open for over six years – which can mean only one thing: CAKE!  Yes, it’s time for our Sixth Anniversary Party!  This year is extra special because it is also our Grand Re-Opening party.  We’ve been in the new location for nearly one month, and all the extra space should come in handy for the party.

When: Sat, June 22nd, 2013 – 12:00pm-6:00pm

Anniversary Draws: Just by dropping in you will be given a ballot for our Anniversary Draws, and you can earn additional ballots throughout the day with every purchase.  This year we will be giving away some great prizes, so be sure to pop in!

Auction: Every year at our anniversary we take the opportunity to clean house a bit and auction off all kinds of great stuff.  Whatever your tastes are there is certainly something in the auction that you can nab for a great deal.  We will be following the format from last year with a Silent Auction portion from 1:00pm-2:00pm, then at 2pm we will take any items with more than one bidder and start up a live auction to finish them off!

Open Gaming:  Enjoy the new space!  Bring your board games, miniatures, and/or cards and get some gaming in!

Cake: What would a birthday be without a cake?  Well we don’t want to find out, so scarf down some tasty desert!

So, come and help us celebrate our six years as Hamilton’s Game Store!

New Episode of Table Top: Smash Up

The good folks at Table-Top tackle one of our favorites at Black Knight Games – Smash Up!

Call to Arms: Warhammer 2013

WFB Call to Arms 2013

The dust has settled, and the new store is open.  Now that we’re done building a new store we can re-focus on the important stuff – our hobbies!  It’s time for Call to Arms: Warhammer 2013!  For those unfamiliar with ‘Call to Arms’ it is an army building league that we run for different game systems.  It gives you a great excuse to try and get that army finished, as well as the motivation to actually do it!  We have recently changed up how we run Call to Arms, but the basics are still the same: Get stuff at a good deal, paint that stuff, play some games, and get a reward for finishing.

sm BK Painting MiniWhen: Call to Arms: Warhammer 2013 begins now, so sign up right away!

Deadline: Sunday, August 11th, 12:00pm

Entry Fee: $150.00

You Get: $170.00 worth of miniatures for the army.  You can put this credit towards anything that helps you get the army finished, including paint, tools, flock, etc.  Just by signing up you get a deal!

Victory Conditions: It is the goal of all participants to complete a 1500 point Warhammer army from scratch.  If the army is completed by the deadline they will be eligible for a cut of the Victory Pool prize!  Participants must also attend a minimum of two Call to Arms Events during that time.  There will be at least one Call to Arms event each week.

Victory Pool: Black Knight Games will put $20 per participant in to a Victory Pool.  This pool will be split among the participants that complete the victory conditions by the deadline.

Armies:  Armies must be a legal 1500 point Warhammer army.  The miniatures used for the army may be new (either from your entry fee start-up, or bought separately) or they may be miniatures you already have.  If you wish to use miniatures you already owned before the Call to Arms began you must show the BKG staff that they are not yet painted (either in person or send us a picture).

Call to Arms Events: Each week we will run Call to Arms events (often on Sunday, but not always).  These will be a mix of things from painting-groups, to gaming, to special scenarios.  Each participant must attend at least two Call to Arms events before the deadline to satisfy the victory conditions.  The Call to Arms events will give you a great opportunity to meet, play, and paint with other gamers at BKG that are working on Warhammer armies too.  Together we will motivate each other to get these armies done!

Summer of Terrain Blog 01: Seven Years

Now that the move is over and we are fine-tuning things here I finally have the chance to begin a project that has been seven years in the making.

Seven years ago Black Knight Games was not in our exciting new location, it wasn’t in the original location, it wasn’t even a registered business.  Seven years ago Black Knight Games was a dream I had, that I was actively working towards.  I was living in Ottawa working as a manager at Games Workshop and taking night classes in the hopes that I might learn something useful about opening my own shop (I didn’t). I had this idea about what I wanted my store to be, it was clean, spacious, and had a fun environment.  People could play all kinds of games in the shop, but our specialty was to be wargames.  And one thing was certain: we would have AMAZING terrain for those games.

Blog1

Working at Games Workshop I had acquired a love of really nice scenery, and I had a knack for making it too.  I knew that no matter what my store’s scenery would impress…I was wrong.  Turns out opening a business is hard work, and when you are dealing with mandatory things like ordering inventory, opening a bank account, and painting the walls the fun stuff like store terrain falls to the back of the cue.  So, we ended up with some great pieces, but mostly quick and dirty and functional terrain.  It didn’t match, there wasn’t a great theme to it, but it would do.

Until now.  Now that we have moved, we have upgraded pretty much everything here at Black Knight Games.  We have more space, we have more shiny, and the shop is much closer to the dream I had seven years ago.  So now it is time to dust off my old goal of having amazing terrain for the shop.  I am declaring this the Summer of Terrain!  My goal is that by summer’s end (September 21st) that we will have purged all the old ‘good enough’ terrain, and replaced it with themed sets, matching terrain, and premium tables.  Every week I will be scheduling myself and another staffer to work on new tables, updating terrain, and adding new stuff – and I plan to document it all here so that you can get as excited about the new scenery as I am, and so you can see the process for yourselves.

Justin’s Infinity Table

There is a lot we are planning to do, but you’ve got to start somewhere and to me the natural starting point is with the terrain and tables that we owe to our generous BUILDER and LANDSCAPER perk-holders from our fundraiser. This will give you a chance to watch our progress as we fulfill the requests of our perk-holders as well adding some transparency to the process.

The first project I will be working on is the first Premium Table.  Premium tables are special display tables that will be set up all the time, allowing us to do all sorts of things we can’t do with usual modular tables.  The first premium table was claimed by Justin who wanted us to address our lack of terrain for Infinity.  He wanted a congested city with lots of levels, and lots of cover and terrain.  This kind of project is a perfect use of a Premium table as Infinity requires more complex terrain elements than a table for 40K or Warmachine, so I couldn’t wait to sink me teeth in to it.

Initial inspiration came from the idea of a crowded, high-tech sci-fi city like in the picture to the right, and movies like Blade Runner, Minority Report, or A.I..  I also really liked the idea of tying elements of Time Square in with advertisements everywhere.  Billboards and signs would be a fun way of taking this table to the next level and playing with the lines of sight.  After exploring websites of companies that deal in infinity-style scenery it became clear that an affordable and very detailed style of terrain, using laser-cut MDF, was very common.  So I have scoured the internet and ordered from five different companies, acquiring a great selection of buildings.  I have also snagged a bunch of great little details like com-panels, furniture for inside the buildings, phone booths, and sci-fi vehicles.  Honestly I may have gone a bit overboard, but truthfully it’s for a good cause as our Infinity players have been forced to bodge together terrain scraps up until now.

I have given the design to Fred who will make us the frame and base of the table which will have two levels to it, as well as a tunnel.  Total price tag so far: $725.00.

Join me next week when we begin to put the terrain together, and hopefully have the base table built!  I will also share details on the layout.

I hope you enjoy following our progress as we quest to have the terrain our gamers deserve!

New Episode of Table Top: Forbidden Island

This week the good folks at Table Top show us a great, and very affordable, game called Forbidden Island.  The game shares some mechanics with Matt Leacock’s other popular masterpiece: Pandemic.  It’s definitely a great co-operative game, so give it a view!  You can find Forbidden Island on the shelves of BKG and on our online store!

Warmachine & Hordes: New League Starts this Week

WMH-Machinations-Anomaly

With the timing of our move, we were forced to postpone the next phase of the dark, sinisterly secretive Privateer Press sponsored league: Machinations.  Postpone, dear Warmachine and Hordes players, but not neglect!  Anomaly is the second season of this years league series.  Check out all the special rules for models and secrets here (don’t worry, we’ll wait).

Rules for this league are similar to previous rules.  Special league models may be used.  Games may be played throughout the week, as much as you like, but never against the same person twice in a row.

Each game recorded is played at a specific location, which the player with fewer league points may choose.  Each of these locations have special rules and may change the game play.  Every time you win at a specific location it will score a result for your faction at that location, tracked by a global leaderboard.

Players participating in this season of the league will receive participation badges if they play at least three games.  The highest total score between games played and hobby points from painting wins achampionship badge.

League games are a ton of fun.  Black Knight Games sets aside Thursday Nights for warmachine/hordes play and league games will be easiest to get involved in on those nights.  If you’re not available for Thursdays on a regular basis, cames can be played any other day, at any time the store is open while the league is running.

A few notes:  Because we’re running this league a little late, points accrued in matches will not contribute to the global leaderboard or unlocking the vault (already unlocked).  However, it is a great opportunity to come out, learn the game, have a blast, and meet some friendly faces.

Cyriss 2014

Speaking of friendly faces, Black Knight Games is now the home store for two very enthusiastic Press Gangers.  Both Matt and I (Tim) are very excited to be supporting the store in an official capacity.  As official Privateer Press representatives of the game, Matt and I can be called upon to help with rules questions, run demos for new players (or players feeling a little rusty), and will be helping to run the tournaments and leagues at BKG.  Most of you already know me, but if you haven’t met Matt he’s an amazing player and a super fun guy to have a game with.  He’s fresh from Lock and Load and will be busting out some Convergence of Cyriss for our league this season, so beat him at his own game before he figures out how the faction works!
